How to Stay Sweet This Valentine's Day

February is the month of sweets! Chocolate and candy run deep on grocery store shelves for that Valentine’s Day rush and all those sweet treats may leave you with aching teeth and a head full of guilt and shame over “failing” at healthy eating.

Believe it or not, it’s very possible to enjoy some sweet treats without derailing your health goals. In fact, part of the reason the Fab 4 philosophy works is because it’s flexible enough to allow for life to happen - you don’t have to live in a bubble in order to be healthy. Having some guiding principles, like the Fab 4, helps you focus on the big picture of health rather than striving for absolute perfection.

While I don’t think you have to swear off everything sweet forever, it’s important to know that eating sweets makes you crave more sweet things. Because this is the case, I want you to know there are plenty of Fab 4 friendly sweet options for you, too. These may make it easier for you to enjoy desserts from time to time without dealing with such intense cravings later on. One easy way to do this is to buy less sweet treats.

Opting for dark chocolate over milk chocolate is one easy way to do this. Dark chocolate contains antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that have been shown to benefit heart health. Aim for at least 70% cocoa content and consider buying something with individually wrapped pieces. It’s easier to grab a couple pieces than open a full bar and then eat only a few bites. Try this variety pack of chocolate or this delicious dark chocolate almond bark for some straight up chocolate goodies. Or make your own bite size treats with my freezer fudge recipe!

Another way to satisfy your sweet tooth is to whip up a filling Fab 4 smoothie. Sipping on this Cookies and Cream Smoothie is like having dessert anytime of the day (you can thank Jennifer Garner for the recipe). My Cherry Cacao Be Well Smoothie will fulfill all your chocolate-covered cherry dreams. And for all you chocolate devotees, you’ve gotta try my Dark Chocolate Sea Salt Smoothie

Finally, whether you indulge some this month or stick to the straight and narrow, be kind to yourself. A few sweets now and then is not the end of the world. You can always start fresh tomorrow!
